OSSE is pleased to announce a new training designed to support LEA leaders and special education administrators in implementing effective Child Find and initial evaluation processes in their LEAs. Child Find is a set of policies, procedures, and public awareness activities designed to locate, identify, and evaluate children who may require special education and related services. Each LEA must have policies and procedures in effect to ensure that all children with disabilities in need of special education and related services, regardless of severity of disability, are identified, located, and evaluated. OSSE is requesting that the special education coordinator and one other staff member, preferably from the leadership team, attend the session.
This half-day, mandatory training for LEAs will provide participants with:
- An understanding of federal and local requirements under IDEA Part B related to key special education obligations and recent updates;
- An overview of procedural requirements related to the initial evaluation process under federal and local law, including timeline and process changes expected to be effective July 1, 2018;
- An update on the Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District Supreme Court decision and key considerations for IEP teams; and
- Key resources to use at their LEAs, including a turnkey presentation for training their staff, a model LEA Child Find policy, guidance on the recent Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District Supreme Court decision, and a special education parent brochure.
This training will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, 9 a.m.--12 p.m. and repeated on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, 1-4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, 9 a.m.--12 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, 9 a.m.--12 p.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, 9 a.m.--12 p.m. All sessions will be held at the new OSSE location, 1050 First St. NE.
