About the instructor: Chris Alvear, a native of Karnes City, Texas, is a local DC artist who works with a multitude of mediums including oil, acrylic, pastels and charcoal. Chris, known to many for his Alvear Studio that was a landmark for many years on Barracks Row, has also been a featured guest on HGTV and the Food Network. His work has been shown in local boutiques, hotels and galleries around the DC metro area. Chris, inspired by Frida Kahlo, Dali and Reggie Troilo, is known for his expressive works depicting social commentary and spirituality. His pieces are among the art collections of individuals worldwide. He brings his love of art to the classes he currently teaches to seniors at a local nursing facility here in the District. His energetic use of color evokes mystery, peace and an edgy style that provokes thought and conversation.

About the restaurant: At Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar, our culinary mission is straightforward - use the best local ingredients as simply as possible. New American Cuisine places an emphasis on seasonal ingredients that are regionally available, and our menu changes frequently to reflect the Mid-Atlantic’s offerings. The first floor, a bustling, “upscale-casual” bistro and wine bar, offers superior moderately-priced cuisine by using the best local, organic, and naturally raised ingredients. The menu bears a southern European influence, and is comprised of four groups: cheese and charcuterie, handmade pasta and pizzas, wood-grilled meats and fish, and organic salads and produce. The second floor features a lounge and reserve wine bar along with a dining room for private events. Sonoma is a venture of longtime friends Eli Hengst and Jared Rager. The duo, who met as undergrads at Middlebury College, went into business together in 2002 and dedicated themselves to developing neighborhood restaurants. We strive to integrate sustainable practices in all our restaurants: from sourcing local ingredients, to our use of renewable energy sources, we aspire to be more than just a culinary trend-setter.
