Earlier this year, the school partnered with Vanderbilt University using a videoconferencing tool in one of the school’s two science labs. Working with a scientist during a hands-on STEM lab, students watched in amazement as they witnessed the formation of their very own DNA.
The Congressional Schools of Virginia offers its students fully equipped technology centers, music and art studios, two swimming pools, an auditorium and so much more. Reinforcing its reputation for outstanding academics, Congressional students regularly receive national recognition. In 2012 Congressional Middle School students placed first in Virginia and second in the nation on the National French Contest. In the same year, a group of seventh grade students achieved high honors at the national WordMasters Challenge, placing 12th in the nation, and the school’s MathCounts Club achieved gold level status for the second consecutive year.
The school’s extensive grounds represent an important aspect of each child’s education. More than an attractive backdrop to school life, the campus serves as a naturalist’s laboratory and includes nature trails, an outdoor learning center, a wide range of sports fields, swimming pools, a ropes course, climbing wall and an amphitheater. Congressional students benefit from these extraordinary resources in so many ways, including physical education. The campus is an integral part of the school’s athletics program as it encourages each student to develop a life-long commitment to activity and fitness. A member of the Capital Athletic Conference, The Congressional Schools of Virginia displays numerous banners and trophies for athletic achievement and sportsmanship, including the Boys Varsity Basketball Team’s 2012 banner for placing first in the West Division of the Capital Athletic Conference.
